How to Spot a Phishing Email

  1. 1.
Check the sender's email address — not just the display name. Scammers use domains like "support@amaz0n-security.com" instead of "@amazon.com".
  2. 2.
Hover over links (don't click) — the URL shown and the actual link destination are often different.
  3. 3.
Look for urgency language — "Your account will be locked," "Verify within 24 hours," "Immediate action required."
  4. 4.
Check for personalization — "Dear Customer" instead of your actual name is a red flag.
  5. 5.
Verify independently — go directly to the company's website (type the URL yourself) instead of clicking any links in the email.

Types of Phishing Attacks

📧 Email Phishing

Mass-sent emails impersonating banks, tech companies, or government agencies. The most common type.

🎯 Spear Phishing

Targeted attacks using your name, job title, or company info. Much harder to detect.

🐋 Whaling

Phishing targeting executives and C-suite leaders. Often involves fake wire transfer requests.

📱 Smishing (SMS)

Phishing via text messages. Package delivery scams and bank alerts are the most common.
